Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Anniversary
Mayor J. Crompton noted that the 10-year anniversary celebrations for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games begin February 12, 2020. He noted that the two months of celebrations include dozens of events at the Whistler Public Library, Whistler Olympic Plaza and throughout Whistler Village.
Whistler Pride
Mayor J. Crompton thanked the organizers for the 28th Whistler Pride celebration for an excellent event.
Whistler Podcast
Mayor J. Crompton noted that episode seven of The Whistler Podcast is now online. He noted that he chatted with former Mayor Ken Melamed about Whistler’s bid to be the Host Mountain Resort for the 2010 twenty ten Games, the experience of the Games, and Games legacies. The podcast can be found online at whistler.ca/whistlerpodcast. He added that he will be doing several podcasts over the coming two months to mark the 10-year anniversary of the Games.
Community Life Survey
Mayor J. Crompton noted that the Community Life Survey random phone survey is continuing until 300 full-time residents and 200 second homeowners have completed it. He added that the results of this annual survey help Council and RMOW staff better understand community priorities to inform plans, municipal services and other community initiatives. The survey results are also part of tracking progress on the Corporate Plan and providing input into the Community Monitoring Program.
Whistler’s Evacuation Guide
Mayor J. Crompton noted that the community received a copy of Whistler’s Evacuation Guide in their mailboxes recently. The Guides detail evacuation zones, muster points where people without vehicles can gather, and an emergency preparation checklist. He encouraged everyone to sign up for Whistler Alert: the local emergency notification system that the RMOW would use to communicate with residents and visitors during any emergency. Community Enrichment Program
Mayor J. Crompton noted that the Community Enrichment Program (CEP) is accepting applications for funding until February 15, 2020. He added that this program is one of the ways the RMOW financially supports not-for-profit organizations and societies that benefit the resort municipality. Find out more at whistler.ca/CEP.
Parking Rates
Mayor J. Crompton advised that parking rates have increased this month for Main Street, Blackcomb Way, Municipal Hall and the surface lot at the Conference Centre. The rates are now $2.00 per hour. He added that this is the first rate increase since pay parking was introduced in those areas more than a decade ago. He noted that drivers can pay using the Pay by Phone app.
Climate Crisis Vital Café
Mayor J. Crompton noted that 45 people attended the Climate Crisis Vital Café at Whistler Public Library last month. He added that the Vital Cafés are a series of themed community conversations about issues affecting Whistler, and are put on by the Community Foundation of whistler.
Councillor C. Jewett
Councillor C. Jewett noted that Art in a Heart exhibition is on at the Maury Young Arts Centre from February 3 to 23. She added that the new exhibition at the Audain Museum, The Extended Moment, begins on February 8, 2020. Councillor C. Jewett also noted that the Andrew Collins Trio will be playing at the Maury Young Arts Centre on February 5.
